As data reporting halts, outbreaks in Iowa nursing homes continue to climb – Iowa Capital Dispatch

The number of Iowa nursing home residents and workers infected by a currently active COVID-19 outbreak rose by 43% in the past two weeks to almost 2,200.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, there are 114 Iowa nursing homes in outbreak status this week, which is equal to roughly 1 in 4 Iowa care facilities. The number of homes in outbreak status has risen 33% from the 86 reported by IDPH two weeks ago.

There are now 2,197 infections associated with the 114 active outbreaks.

Statewide, only 33% of nursing home workers have been fully vaccinated and received a booster shot, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The increase in infections and outbreaks coincides with plans by the Iowa Department of Public Health to stop collecting data from Iowa nursing homes on COVID-19 infections among residents and staff. This week’s report represents the state’s final public update on the location of outbreaks in Iowa care facilities.

The biggest active outbreak in any Iowa care facility continues to be at the state-run Iowa Veterans Home. Three weeks ago, there were 55 infections associated with the current outbreak at the home. This week, IDPH reported 95 infections tied to the outbreak.

This is the seventh COVID-19 outbreak at the Iowa Veterans Home, which has had more outbreaks than any other Iowa care facility. The six previous outbreaks at the Marshall County home resulted in at least 212 infections.

While 96% of the residents at the Iowa Veterans Home have been fully vaccinated, only about 50% of the staff have been full vaccinated and received a booster shot, according to data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

During the pandemic, seven residents of the Iowa Veterans Home have died of COVID-19, according to CMS.
