Cape Cod Times Needy Fund helps heart-attack survivor with heat and rent – Cape Cod Times
A 70-year-old single woman called Needy Fund for assistance with rent and heat.
She was struggling both mentally and physically while managing heart disease after having a heart attack. She was also dealing with cellulitis.
The mental and physical toll caused her to become confused, which affected her ability to deal with her bills as well as her budget.
Her yearly income is about $8,400 a year from social security, which is below the poverty line for the annual income of a single person.
Having no family to take care of her, the Needy Fund first contacted Elder Services and another social service agency because she is an elder at risk and requires some at-home assistance. They helped the woman apply for food stamps, which she did not know that she qualified for.
Needy Fund also stepped in to help with her rent payments, propane, and gift cards for food.
Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936.

No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the agency pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.
