The price for a kg of silver on March 6 is Rs 70,000 in all major cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Pune – except Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, where it was at Rs 73,400 per kg.
One gram of 22-carat gold was at Rs 4,840 this morning while eight grams will cost Rs 38,720. Ten grams of the precious metal will set one back by Rs 48,400 while 100 grams costs Rs 4,84,000.
The rate of gold jewellery differs across the country due to taxes imposed by states, excise duty and varying making charges. Over the years, the shiny yellow metal had been a good bet against inflation and investors have looked at it as a valuable asset.
The price of silver in India is determined by change in prices internationally; it also depends on movement of the rupee against the dollar. If the rupee falls against its international counterpart and the prices remain consistent internationally, silver ends up becoming dearer.
