RENSSELAER – About 100 people were evacuated from the Van Rensselaer Heights senior housing site at 460 Forbes Ave. in the city Tuesday when an underground electrical cable failed, cutting off heat to the seven-story building, Mayor Michael Stammel said.

The residents were evacuated to the Rensselaer County Senior Citizen Center while work began on repairs. Stammel said the failed cable dated from about 1970 and was frayed.  The temperature was about 3 degrees at 8:20 a.m. in the Albany area, according to the National Weather Service.

Detective Scott Earing said the outage occurred sometime before 6:45 a.m. Police, Fire and EMS crews evacuated the building with the assistance of CDTA, he said.

Stammel said about 40 people were sent to The Desmond Hotel in Colonie for the night with the other people staying with family and friends. A generator was being brought in to hook up to the building. Stammel said National Grid was on the scene.

An evaluation of the situation will be made Wednesday morning, the mayor said.
