March 2022 Consumer Financial Protection Events Announced – Pennsylvania Pressroom

Harrisburg, PA – Education and outreach staff from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS) will be hosting and participating in numerous virtual and in-person presentations for groups of senior citizens, service providers, and the public throughout the month of March to promote financial capability as part of Governor Tom Wolf’s Consumer Financial Protection Initiative.

Most March outreach events will be held virtually and are open to the public, unless otherwise noted, and in partnership with the listed organizations.

For General Audience

Avoiding ID Theft – Identity Theft is a crime that can happen to anyone. Prevention is critical. Learn how it occurs, how to protect yourself, and steps to take if it happens to you. This program will be offered in person at the Bosler Memorial Library at 158 W High Street in Carlisle (Cumberland County) on March 5 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Popular Scams and How to Avoid Them – a look at some of the common scams and ways you can protect yourself from becoming a victim – will be offered virtually at the Cleve J. Credit Reports and Scores – a presentation on the importance of credit, using it wisely and tips to improve your score – will be presented via Zoom at Lycoming CareerLink in Williamsport (Lycoming County) on March 15 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Planning for Retirement – a presentation looking at the ins and outs of retirement planning, questions to ask, types of investments, and much more – will be presented to Bucks County SCORE (Bucks County) on March 22 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Spending Plans – A Roadmap to Financial Success – a presentation on the need for a spending plan, setting financial goals, creating and maintaining a spending plan, and staying on track with your finances – will be presented at the Free Library of Philadelphia, West Oak Lane Branch in Philadelphia (Philadelphia County) on March 23 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Cybersecurity – Keeping Yourself Safe Online – providing tips for protecting your personal information while shopping safely online – will be presented:

“Fraud BINGO” – a fun and interactive presentation teaching consumers to protect themselves from investment fraud by playing a familiar game, BINGO! – will be presented in person at:

Working with DoBS – an overview of the department, how to work with our outreach staff, and how the Consumers Service Office team may be able to assist consumers with questions or complaints regarding financial institutions – will be presented at Charles T. Reverse Mortgages – a presentation covering a general overview of reverse mortgages, benefits and drawbacks, requirements, alternatives to consider (such as a home equity line of credit), your obligations and repaying debt – will be presented at Montco Senior Adult Activity Center in Norristown (Montgomery County) on March 21 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM.   • National Federation of the Blind PA at 1500 Walnut Street, #200 in Philadelphia (Philadelphia County) on March 24 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Open to members.

STaRT (Start Today and Retire Tomorrow) – a presentation on retirement planning – will be presented at PA CareerLink Bucks County in Bristol (Bucks County) on March 2 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Open to networking group.

Student Loan Debt – a presentation to the Financial Coaching Network from Women’s Way by the PA Higher Education Assistance Agency and the Department of Banking and Securities – will be presented via Zoom on March 3 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Fraud Bingo will be presented to members of the Special Olympics Pennsylvania at 2570 Boulevard of the Generals, Suite 124 in Norristown (Montgomery County) on March 15 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Open to members.

Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation (EIFFE) – a presentation helping professionals understand the red flags of elder financial exploitation, and how to report – will be presented in person to Potter County Tax Collectors (Potter County) on March 19 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Open to biannual meeting attendees.

DoBS staff and the Nurse-Family Partnership of Lehigh Valley Health Network (Monroe County) will continue its nine-session series looking at financial security for new families with the third and fourth sessions covering Credit Reports and Scores on March 8 and So, You Want to Buy a Car? on March 22 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The program is open to partnership participants.

Cybersecurity: Scam and Identity Theft Prevention for the Disability Community will be presented via Zoom for Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. on March 23 at 10:00 AM and again at 4:00 PM and for parents and other members of the disability community on March 26 at 1:00 PM. For more information, contact: Lori Burrus, lburrus@yapinc.org or 717-269-7969.
