Nine teams left with shot at Hershey gold – Altoona Mirror
From Mirror reports
Nine high school basketball teams from the Mirror’s core coverage area begin their quest to qualify for the PIAA quarterfinals with second round games that start tonight.
The Bellwood-Antis girls will be the first game in a doubleheader at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg tonight when the Lady Blue Devils take on District 10 champion West Middlesex at 6 p.m. in a rematch of the teams’ 2019 PIAA Class 2A championship game, won by Bellwood-Antis.
Following that contest, the Penn Cambria boys will take on WPIAL runner-up Montour at 7:30 p.m. in a Class 4A second round game.
Two area Class 1A boys teams will also be in action tonight.
District 6 champion Bishop Carroll Catholic will take on WPIAL runner-up Union at Armstrong High School in Kittanning at 7:30 p.m., and Williamsburg will stay a little closer to home with a game against WPIAL fourth-place finisher Imani Christian at Greater Johnstown High School at 6 p.m. The Chestnut Ridge girls will take on District 6 champion River Valley in the second game of the doubleheader at Johnstown in a 3A second-round game at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday’s schedule could change due to possible weather issues, but as the current schedule stands, there will be a tripleheader featuring teams from the Mirror’s coverage area at Norwin High School in Irwin beginning at 3 p.m. when the District 6 champion Portage girls will take on District 5 runner-up Berlin Brothersvalley in a Class 1A second-round game. The Lady Mustangs defeated Berlin, 53-39, in December.
The Portage boys will try to punch their ticket to the 2A quarterfinals following that game with a 4:30 tip against WPIAL runner-up Fort Cherry. The Hollidaysburg girls meet up with Chartiers Valley for the second time in three years in the state playoffs in the nightcap at 6 p.m. for a 5A second-round contest.
In another game where teams are familiar with each other, the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic boys will try to beat Chestnut Ridge for the third time this season when the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference foes meet at Richland for a 4 p.m. tip in their Class 3A second round game.
The Williamsburg girls will also be in action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. Class 1A second-round game against District 3 champion Mount Calvary Christian at Mifflin County High School at 3 p.m.
