Greetings from North Central College!
Tax season is here, and I’m reminded yet again of the added anxiety this season can produce in our lives. That’s why I’m so proud that North Central plays a role in preparing students, alumni, and members of the public to navigate these challenges.
Consider the College’s Center for Financial Literacy, which impacts our students and the community. All of our students, regardless of major, benefit from resources provided by the Center on budgeting, saving, and retirement planning. The Center also provides free courses about credit scores and how to pay for college to high school students, and free merit badge programs on entrepreneurship to local Girl and Boy Scout troops. The public has access to free personal finance offerings provided by the Center through its partnerships with the Naperville Public Library and other local nonprofit groups. I invite you to learn more about these programs on our website, northcentralcollege.edu. Just type “Center for Financial Literacy” in the search bar.
Each year, North Central accounting students provide volunteer tax assistance to low-income residents at no charge. For more information, see the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at www.irs.gov.Each year, North Central accounting students provide volunteer tax assistance to low-income residents at no charge. In our Bloomberg Finance Lab, students learn about economic theory, currencies, stocks and bonds, and more as they use the technology that Wall Street professionals depend on every day. If they wish, students can become “Bloomberg certified.” If you know a high school student who is interested in a finance or investment career, they can contact our Office of Admissions to set up a tour and “test run” of the lab. Learn more by searching “Bloomberg Finance Lab” on our website.
While these programs are open to all North Central students, they’re especially helpful to business, finance, and accounting majors, who graduate as well-rounded critical thinkers and are highly sought after by employers across our region. In fact, many of these students receive job offers well before they graduate.
Students in the College’s School of Business and Entrepreneurship are the financial professionals of the future, but our goal is for all students to graduate knowing how to manage their personal finances and make healthy financial decisions while serving the community with their skills.
