STATE SWIMMING: Cougars’ Mattes captures gold and silver at 1A meet – Sarasota Herald-Tribune


Cardinal Mooney Catholic junior Michaela Mattes took home two medals from the FHSAA Class 1A State State Swimming Meet.

The defending Herald-Tribune Female Swimmer of the Year, Mattes captured gold in the 500 free in 4 minutes, 45.51 seconds, nearly 9 seconds faster than her closest competitor Saturday at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center. It was the third straight year she captured the event, winning in 4:46.59 as a freshman and 4:47.19 last year.

The defending champion in the 200 individual medley, Mattes claimed silver this season in 2:00.71, just behind Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest’s Julia Podkoscielny’s 1:59.57. Podkoscielny was the Class 2A champion the past two years. 

Cardinal Mooney finished 14th in the team standings with 37 points. Jacksonville Bolles won the team title with 370. 

On the boys’ side, Out-of-Door’s Felipe Baffico Balharry took seventh in the 100 butterfly in 49.11 and eighth in the 200 free in 1:40.2. He also was part of the Thunder’s 200 free relay team that took 10th in 1:28.41 and the 400 free relay team that captured 11th in 3:16.65.

Out-of-Door ended 13th in the team standings with 57 points. Bolles made it a clean sweep with a whopping 574 points.
