Teenager Killed, Four Injured After Speeding Tesla Driver Crashes Into Mill Basin Senior Living Facility – Gothamist

A teenager was killed and four others were injured after a speeding Tesla driver slammed into a senior living facility in Brooklyn on Thursday night, police said.

The crash, which happened just before midnight, killed 18-year-old Jack Levy, who was sitting in the rear passenger-side seat of the vehicle when it veered off the road. Four of the other vehicle occupants, including the 22-year-old driver, were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

According to police, the driver of the 2021 Tesla sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed on National Drive when he lost control of the vehicle while turning onto Strickland Avenue in Mill Basin. The vehicle then struck a metal fence, two garbage dumpsters, and a retaining wall, before finally coming to a stop against a wall of the Sunrise assisted living facility. No residents of the senior facility were injured.

Traffic fatalities of skyrocketed across the five boroughs this year, reaching the highest death toll since Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative launched in 2014. Through Wednesday, 103 people have been killed in crashes in New York City.

Transportation officials have blamed the rise in fatalities, in part, on an uptick in speeding that began during the pandemic and has continued as the city begins to reopen.

Police did not say whether the Tesla’s driver may face charges.
