Demolition crews were busy Monday knocking down the 80-year-old theatre-turned-nightclub at 192 Lochiel St. to make way for the Bayside Centre redevelopment.

The former Odeon movie theatre was designed in the art deco style by the architectural firm of Kaplan & Sprachman and opened around 1941. It was later twinned and continued operating as a movie theatre until it was closed in the mid-1990s.

The building then took on new life as the Tequila Rocks nightclub and Industry Theatre, a concert venue with seating for 585 that featured professional and local bands.

In 2015 the vacant building was listed for $289,900.

The former theatre and a large portion of the adjacent mall are being demolished to accommodate a new retirement community with residential towers and assisted-living units.
