As people continue to live much longer than previous generations, it’s imperative they give consideration to their future living arrangements. When it comes to that, here are three things to keep in mind:

1. Aging in place

This is an option for older adults who are healthy, independent and safe at home. Some planning is required to properly manage, maintain, and retain control of the home, and it is important to know one’s limitations and accept help when needed. This option should also address current and future needs, with strategies in place to ensure the home is clutter-free, clean, and safe. Hiring a professional caregiver when needed, utilizing local social service programs, and managing medications are critical components to a safe and productive life. Socialization is also an important element of aging well. Those who require transportation or have limited mobility should consider moving into a senior living setting where they will be safe, have access to transit, build friendships and enjoy a support network that contributes positively to their mental health.

2. Moving to a new home

Downsizing should take into account current and near-future health needs. For instance, independent living communities are geared towards older adults with minimal medical issues. Floor plans range from studios, one-bedroom or two-bedroom options, and include a full or mini kitchen, emergency pull cords, a sitting area, and a private bathroom. Meal packages are available depending on preference. While laundry is usually not included, housekeeping is. Activities are offered for the residents living in the building and they can choose to be as social as they desire.

Assisted living communities offer apartment style living for those with some medical needs and independency issues. Medication assistance is available as well as activities, programs, partial kitchens, laundry service, and housekeeping. Many offer 24-hour, on-site nursing, scheduled transportation, and a central dining area for all meals.

3. Importance of staying active

No matter where you live, activities are imperative to a healthy aging process. To that end, remaining social and attending activities that are of interest will help you age well.
