Welltower Names Burkhardt as COO – Senior Housing News
Welltower (NYSE: WELL) has named John F. Burkhardt as executive vice president and chief executive officer. He will join the Toledo, Ohio-based real estate investment trust (REIT) on July 19, 2021.
Previously, Burkhardt was SVP and COO for 25 years at multifamily REIT Essex Property Trust (NYSE: ESS).
“I have known John for over a decade and have witnessed the tremendous value he and his team have created for shareholders through operational innovation and astute capital allocation,” Welltower CEO Shankh Mitra said in a press release issued Tuesday. “As with Welltower, John shares a passion for data-driven decision-making in all facets of an organization. His expertise, leadership, and strategic vision will be invaluable as we embark on a number of growth opportunities in the coming years.”
Burkhardt’s duties at Welltower will include leadership responsibilities pertaining to platform-wide operations, asset and portfolio management, data analytics, research, and joint venture partnerships, according to the release.
Burkhardt joins Welltower about eight months after Mitra stepped into the CEO role.
Welltower also announced the appointment of Andrew Haslam as vice president, health systems strategy, in a business update on Tuesday. Haslam will join the REIT after concluding his tenure with head of real estate and chief asset officer with health system Providence St. Joseph.
Welltower has been gaining occupancy in its senior housing operating portfolio throughout the spring, with spot occupancy at 73.8% as of June 4, according to Tuesday’s update.
