The Witcher Star Henry Cavill Discusses On-Set Injury’s Silver Lining – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Henry Cavill, Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, discusses his on-set hamstring injury, mental health and love for physical fitness.

Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series, discussed how he didn’t let the hamstring injury he suffered last year set him back.

“When I look back, I realize, yes, it was a hard time,” Cavill told People. “I think one of the skills I’ve picked up over the years is just forging ahead regardless of difficulty or hard work or trials and tribulations. So when the hamstring injury came, I tried to look at the silver lining. It was like, ‘Ok. I was working insane hours and it was exhausting and I now physically can’t work because I’m on crutches.’ So I was focusing more on taking the time off and going, how can I best heal myself?”

Cavill injured his leg last December during the production of the second season of Netflix’s fantasy epic, and filming was able to continue while the actor recovered. Injuries during filming are a fairly common occurrence in the entertainment industry, particularly in action-orientated narratives like The Witcher. While some actors and stuntpersons suffer a mental blow when injured, Cavill was determined to not let that happen.

“When it comes to my mental health, [I] focus on what I can control and work on that. And that gives me something to work towards rather than something to deal with or work through or manage my life through,” the actor explained.

Another factor that likely allowed Cavill to view the injury as a silver-lining instead of a major setback is his incredible drive. He explained that he wasn’t always a “spectacular physical specimen” and didn’t discover his love for fitness until later in life, but he always had a high level of motivation.

Moreover, with the injury behind him and no new roles in his immediate future, Cavill is harnessing the lessons he learned because of the leg injury to help others improve their fitness and mental health. “I want to build a better engine,” he stated. “One of the things my physical therapy for my hamstring showed me was that I have a lot of capacity in my engine but I have not accessed it. And it’s something which I really want to build upon.”

The actor recently partnered with the supplement company MuscleTech and is now the company’s Chief Creative Director and Global Brand Ambassador. He is utilizing his new positions to promote a message of wellness, both mentally and physically. “We have all the necessary ingredients within us to become whatever we wish to become,” Cavill said. “We have that strength, we have that resilience. And it’s just about keying into those necessary ingredients and then utilizing them to intentionally create a physical self as well.”

Season 1 of The Witcher is available to stream on Netflix, and Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 17, 2021.
